Aris Ikiades

Aris Ikiades obtained his PhD in Optical Communications from the University of Kent (UK), having received an MSc in 1987 in Laser Physics and Non-Linear Optics from the University of Essex, and a BSc. (Hons) in Applied Physics from the University of South Bank, London in 1984. He is currently employed as an Assistant Professor in Physics department, University of Ioannina, prior to which, from 1993 to 2004 he was a Research Scientist at FORTH IESL, Iraclion, Crete. In the early 90’s he was Development Engineer at York Sensors Ltd and before this was a Research Fellow at University of Kent He has published over 40 publications in fibre optics and telecommunication journals and conferences. His research interests are fibre optic sensing, and FBG, LPG Whispering gallery Modes and mirroring evanescent sensing and fibre optic ice detection . His experience includes FBG-based distributed strain / temperature sensor, , fibre lasers and amplifiers, Raman fibre optical Distributed Temperature Sensor  and a Q-switched fibre laser. He has participated and coordinated many national and European research projects such as:

· Coordinator for GROWTH Programme “ACIDS” on Ice detection with fibre optic sensors

· Coordinator for -Brite-Euram/CRAFT Programme on fibre optic based smart   structures in aerospace

· Scientific Officer in National program: SYN, developing a  fibre optic biosensor

· Scientific Officer in National program: EPET/PAVE Programme for development of a multi-wavelength fibre laser source. (Collaborative project with Greek Telecom (OTE)

· Scientific Officer for FORTH SMT Programme for the development of pulse Oximeter calibrator (POC).

· Scientific Officer Brite-Euram fibre optic sensor Programme (OSMOS) (Multinational collaborative   project on smart structures in building and aerospace industries)
